Operated by the Westdeutscher Rundfunk, this public, commercial-free radio broadcaster is tailored toward listeners aged 50 and above. The station underwent a significant programming shift in 2011, pivoting from traditional Schlager music to a playlist dominated by international oldies from the 1960s to the 1980s alongside select German pop tracks. Daily content focuses on regional information, including localized weather and traffic updates for North Rhine-Westphalia, complemented by lifestyle magazines such as "WDR 4 Wunderschön" which highlights regional travel. Interactive elements define the station's identity, featuring listeners' quizzes like "WDR 4 Kopfknoten" and evening segments that emphasize audience participation. Information and on-demand content are available via the official domain wdr4.de. Broadcasts are distributed through FM, DAB+, and digital satellite, with primary production facilities managed at the network's main headquarters in Cologne.
