WHPK

Located at the historic Mitchell Tower bell tower at the University of Chicago, 88.5 FM provides a vital sonic landscape to the South Side of Chicago. Since its establishment on March 22, 1968, the station has championed an eclectic mix of sounds, reaching neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Woodlawn, and Kenwood, areas reflected in its call letters. With its powerful 100-watt signal on 88.5 MHz, the station features programming blocks dedicated to jazz, hip hop, rock, international music, classical, and electronic genres. Volunteer DJs, comprising both university students and local community members, maintain complete artistic and editorial control over their shows, thereby creating a dynamic and unconventional listening experience. Beyond music, WHPK integrates public affairs discussions and hosts live in-studio performances every Friday night, contributing to Chicago's cultural dialogue. The station operates continuously, 24 hours a day, without automation, presenting a diverse selection not typically found on mainstream outlets.
